Which beer is best for the batter?
After hours of discussion and many years of sample testing, I have come to the conclusion that there is no perfect beer for batter. What??? Sure there are some that are better than others , but one that is perfect doesn't exist for the batter.
Let me explain.
You see, the beer in the batter is like a fine wine, it is all about the pairing.
In general the batters do better with the import or micro brewed beers. The mass produced brands , while tasty on a hot day, don't cut it for the batters. Stay away from the light beers if at all possible, waste lines permitting.
For the Baja style I have found Pacifico to be the best all around for most types of fish, yes I said it, the best. This is not to say that Corona, Tecate, Dos XX, Negro Modelo are not great choices too. Thresher shark, which is my favorite fish for the Baja batter, pairs perfectly with Pacifico. Shout out to the LOYT team.
The Asian style have found the best pairing to be Sierra Nevada pale ale , Sam Adams or a Stone ale . Back to my point there is no perfect Beer. Kirin and Singao make the grade too.
My mouth is now watering . . . . .
For the Bread premix two beers stand out, any type of porter for a darker bread, and a fosters for a lighter brew. Grolsch or Heiniken are also a good choices but I had a bad experience with them back in high school years and have never acquired the taste again. I have heard they are great in the bread.
Onion rings, what a treat. Delicious with Pacifico, I always seem to have the yellow tops on hand.
While some beers do stand out, most work, let me know what your favorite pairings are.
For my sober friends, the amount of alcohol left in a fried item is negligible but if you must, a non - alcoholic beer works fine.
Back to the question Which beer is best? This is an example of question that cannot be answered only suggested. Think of it as the the answer to life the universe and everything which is 42 but what is the exact question . . who knows?? Or what is the last digit of pi? Remember the episode of Star Trek where Spock saves the enterprise by asking that question? Yeah I have a serious Geek side too.
Cheers
