Great Grilled Salmon Recipe

Once in a while I run into an excellent slice of salmon at my local fish market, Pearson's Port - that I just can't pass up -

Pearson's Port is an on the water fish market right below the Bridge on Coast Hwy in Newport Beach. When I fished on the local commercial boats we sold our fish there. In fact our boats picture is on the wall.

Enjoy this super simple grilled salmon recipe.

1 1/2 lbs salmon
Lemon pepper
Garlic powder
salt
all ingredients above are to taste , I like a thin coat on the filets

1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup olive oil

Directions:
1. sprinkle the filets with the lemon pepper, garlic and salt ( don't go overboard)

2. In smallish bowl - mix soy, brown sugar, water and olive oil - until the sugar disolves

3. put filets in ziploc - pour in the sauce mix , coat well - seel bag and stick in fridge for a couple hours, flipping bag every 30 min or so -

4. cook over medium grill, lightly oil grill too , before you stick on the fish -

5. 5 - 7 min per side depending on your tatses -

Fathers Day Special Some Great old Pics -

My Dad on the Left, His dad, my grandfather, on the right.
Circa early 1950's in front of Horse Ranch

Impeccable sense of style from an early age, yes, that is an orange tree in the background. Hard to believe that innocent face woke up Xmas morning to find a bundle of switches instead of presents.

I'm a fourth generation Orange County Fisherman, and have my father to thank for that. I grew up in a backyard full of abalone shells, swordfish bills, misc. floats, fishing and dive gear.

The things my dad did was the stuff of legend, from a kids point of view, that is -
Nothing like playing with your friends in the street and having fire crackers thrown at you from the kitchen window! Should have heard him laugh !!

Quick story of his youth: Figured his dads new car needed running boards, nothing like  a couple gunny sacks, box of nails and a hammer to fix the problem. He got a quick lesson in physics that day!
Or
The time he decided to mail a fish to his grandma and neglected to tell anybody there was a fish in the mail box, it gets hot in Orange, can only imagine the stink!

Review - Daiwa Saltist Two Speed Lever Drag 30w

I don't get all geeked up about new gear very often, sure if it is shinny I want it but, this is different -

Searching for a kelp cutting rig for a while now, I thought I had a clear picture of what I wanted, a Shimano Trinidad 20 loaded with spectra, with a flourocarbon top shot, then I ran into the Daiwa Saltist Lever Drag Two Speed. (kind of like when I went into the At&t store to buy a new Blackberry, picked up an iphone, five minutes later I own an Iphone)

The Daiwa is a solid tight package. There is a lot of reel packed in the blue and black aluminum frame.

Top it off it is a lever drag, two speed!

Ahh, yeah from the picks you probably can tell I bought one :)

One of my go to reels is a Daiwa Sealine, that I abuse on a regular basis, don't wash , same drags. I'm hard on gear . . . . . and this thing keeps on ticking! So, I am already a  Daiwa fan -

The Saltist Two Speed Knocked my socks off - Plus it is less expensive than the Trinidad!

OK, enough about how great it looks , how light it is, how bad ass it feels - How does it work?

One word - AWESOME -

The size is perfect -

The lever drag works flawlessly -

Didn't think I would like the two speed, but I do , it is Bitchen -

High Gear 6.3.1 - Low 3.1.1
Super Easy to switch back and forth

I love this reel!

I picked up the 30w , works perfect for the kind of fishing  like to do - White Seabass - Albacore - Blue Fin - Yellow Fin - Etc . . . .

One thing I really like about the Daiwas is their casting ability and the Saltist Two Speed is no exception, it casts beautifully!

There are a lot of good reels on the market, the Daiwa is a great reel above the good reels, with an excellent price point and stellar mechanics.

Compared to my Avet and Trinidads , the Daiwa smokes them both!

Going back for the 40w, once pay day hits, or Fathers day :)

Buy one if you get a chance - you will not be disappointed -

Cheers

Wide Open Dorodo Bite - Spun Prop - Fuuny Story From Back in 08 - Dorado Recipe

Awesome fishing trip back in early summer of 2008

Bob White, Chris Dootsmart were crew and myself as Captain

The fishing was silly wide open on dorado - we were three miles outside of Newport Harbor

Bob White Hooked up!

Right Before we took those pictures  - We Spun the Prop -

A spun prop is not a disaster, more of a nuisance and an expensive fix -

The story that follows occurs a week after the fishing trip:

Spun the prop on my boat last week -

Upgraded from three blade aluminum to four blade stainless

Decided to put the prop on in the water from the swim step - turned out to be a piece of cake except for:
The potential fight -

Boat is at the dock in Newport sunny warm narrow channel

Dad myself -

He pulled the old prop off ,

My job put the new one on.

Balancing the new prop , f*cker is fairly heavy and sharp , leaning over the swim step -

A dude in an inflatable blasts towards us throwing a huge wake

My old man erupts " A**hole slow your f*cking little piece of sh*t down" like most dads mine is a world class verbal warrior -

Old guy in inflatable " F*ck you I have engine problems I can't slow down"

Inflatable is parallel to us right now boat starts to rock

I figure whatever if I ever have to change a prop at sea it will not be smooth -
My old man jumps up on the rail of our boat looks like he is ready to jump in the guys zodiac.

My dad "C*cksucker I am going to shove that little f*cking motor straight up your a$$ get over here "

To myself I am going to have to bail my dad out and slap Mr. broken engine around. Classic

Guy Guns his motor blast faster away - he is gone

In the mean time I got the prop on, goes on easy
Grease gun leaked and got that blue grease everywhere

Pop mellows out
Neighbor is laughing
Good times
Shinny new four Blade Prop

 Four Blade Prop Mounted

Super Easy Dorado Recipe:
Buy one bottle Bernstein's restaurant recipe Italian dressing
Dorado Slabs
Dish or zip lock Bag
BBQ

Prepare -
Open zip lock
Put fish in
Pour dressing over fish until well coated
Zip the bag up or if using a dish cover
Swish the dressing around in the bag to coat the fish real well , kind of stir best you can in the dish
Fire up the BBQ
Fish should sit in dressing for 15 - 30 min

Remove fish from bag and or dish put on BBQ

Cook to your liking!

Delicious!

One of my favorite knots a how to guide - Tying the Palomar knot

How to Tie a Palomar Knot

This is one of my favorite knots.

Easy to tie – Strong – and did I say easy to tie?

Instructions:

1. Double the line over to make a loop. Then feed the loop through the eyelet of the hook.

2. Hold the standing line and form an overhand knot as shown.

3. Pass the hook through the end of the loop.

4. Wet the line with a bit spit – studies have shown the knot to be stronger when tied with a bit of spit a lube.

5. Then pull on the hook, the standing line, and the tag end of the line to tighten the knot. Snug down tightly around the eyelet.

6. Trim the tag end . . . not the end attached to the rod!! ( I have clipped the wrong one more than once – wide open panic mode tuna bite to be exact )

7. Tying the Palomar Knot is complete. You are ready to go –

8. Works great for Iron too -

Season Starts - Balboa Angling Club - Kids Tournament

The Balboa Angling Club -
Located right near the fun zone -
In you guessed it Balboa California -

Starts their junior tournament this weekend, June 12th, with a free trip aboard the Western Pride half day boat, the best part about this trip  . . . . it's free! There will be some great fisherman on this trip helping kids learn and improve their fishing skills! Immediately following the trip there will be a BBQ and opening ceremonies at the club. Fishing is starting to heat up , wish the weather would . .. . . .

Nothing better for your kids to do than participate in this FREE tournament, it lasts most of the summer, they get great prizes and awesome trophies. Last year there were several world records set during the tournament, including our team member here at the Just add beer, Jonny Schniepp.

Prepare yourself if your son or daughter does catch a world record fish, there is a lot of paperwork, you need to get motorized, takes around an hour and needs to have witness information.

At the BBQ and on the boat there will be some great professional anglers on hand to help out. There are a couple in the mix that are semi famous, one in fact as rumor has it, might have been the inventor or one of the first to start the punk dance craze "slam Dancing" which later evolved into the mosh pit. You can see the interview in this film here :We Were Feared  See if you can find the pro angler in the mix!

Should be a fun summer of fishing and cooking - the most perfect food - the Fish Taco!

More tips of the trade:

Top a taco off with a Mexican lime, Mexican limes are usually a bit smaller and have a thinner skin -
You will see what I mean when you peel one, there is a slight difference of taste which lends itself to a perfect blend with salsa and tortillas.

Jonny's tip -

Top the taco with ketchup  . . . lots of it  . . .. .  that's it ketchup!  I tried it, have to admit it's not bad!

Cheers
